Halloween’s just around the corner — costumes, lollies, decorations, and the occasional inflatable skeleton are popping up across the neighbourhood. While it’s all a bit of fun for us, our pets are often left wondering what on earth is going on.

This year, instead of the usual “no chocolate for pets” PSA (still very important!), we’re taking a lighter look at Halloween from your furry friend’s point of view.
🐾 The Doorbell Dilemma
To us, a knock or ring of the doorbell means trick-or-treaters in adorable costumes.
To your dog? It’s a full-blown security breach. Masked strangers every five minutes? Absolutely not.
If your pet’s not a fan of the chaos, set them up in a quiet space away from the front door. Pop on some calming music, offer a favourite toy or chew, and let them enjoy a peaceful night in while you dish out the lollies.
👻 Costumes: Cute or Confusing?
Pets in costumes = instant cuteness overload. But not every animal is keen on dress-ups.
Some are happy to strut their stuff in a pumpkin outfit. Others? Not so much.
Keep it simple, comfy, and brief. If your pet’s giving you the “I’m over this” look, snap a quick photo and let them off the hook. No need to force the spooky vibes.
🍬 Lollies vs. Pet-Friendly Treats
We get it — sharing the Halloween fun is tempting. But human treats can be dangerous for pets. Chocolate, xylitol (found in sugar-free sweets), and even raisins can cause serious health issues.
If your dog’s giving you the guilt-trip eyes while you raid the lolly stash, whip up a pet-safe treat instead. A few pieces of cooked chicken or a frozen banana slice will hit the spot — safe, tasty, and still festive.

Cobwebs, candles, glow sticks — they’re all part of the spooky aesthetic. But to pets, they’re just new toys to chew or climb.Cats especially love a good tangle in fake spiderwebs. Keep decorations out of reach and opt for battery-operated candles to avoid any accidents.
