Did you know that our short nosed, or brachycephalic friends, often need special surgery to assist them to breathe better? Two of these procedures are known as stenotic nares (malformed nasal passage) widening and BOAS surgery, or Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome Surgery. BOAS refers to a collection of characteristics referring to the upper airway of these breeds, including an elongated and thickened soft palette, enlarged tongue and narrower windpipe. We are able to surgically shorten the soft palette, assisting in making the airway more patent. The symptoms and severity of BOAS unfortunately usually progresses with time, and will almost always shorten these animal’s lifespans, and the quality of them.
Here at Berwick Veterinary Hospital, we have veterinary surgeons that are trained in these procedures, as well as having strict protocols in place for our brachycephalic patients whilst they are in our care. We pride ourselves on our ability to help these pets with this type of surgery, allowing them better quality lives, whilst also hopefully helping them to live longer too. Do you have a shorty at home and find that on walks, hot weather or play, they don’t breathe very well? Is their snoring keeping you up at night? Do they have trouble when they are eating, choking and gagging on their food? Ring our friendly staff today to find out more about procedures, cost and availability. We are here to help!
