Bravery Award July 2024 – Jack Jack the Pomeranian

by | Aug 7, 2024

Jack Jack the Pomeranian Following multiple vomits early one morning, Jack Jack was admitted to the team at Berwick Veterinary Hospital for a priority consultation.

Little Jack Jack had otherwise been well in the days leading up to his hospital visit, however upon presentation to the clinic he was lethargic, and his owner reported several bouts of vomiting since the early hours of the morning.

Jack Jack’s owners reported his recent meals had consisted of a tasty, cooked lamb bone and they were fearful the bone had been ingested.

Upon examination, Jack Jack’s abdomen felt tense on palpation and his blood test results gave no indication of pancreatitis. However, his radiographs revealed a foreign body consistent with the lamb bone described by his owners.

Jack Jack was transferred to the surgical team for an exploratory laparotomy – a surgical procedure that involves opening the abdominal cavity to diagnose and treat various conditions. In cases of foreign body ingestion, this procedure allows veterinarians to locate and remove the object, alleviating the blockage and preventing further complications.

Surgical exploration confirmed what was visualised on the pre-op radiographs – a piece of bony material located in the stomach and three smaller bone fragments within the distal colon. Dr. Isabelle successfully removed all bone fragments and little Jack Jack began his surgical recovery.
