Acupuncture – a great adjunct to your pet’s arthritis management plan

by | May 12, 2021

We’re lucky to have our very own Veterinary Acupuncturist here at BVH – Dr. Tracy Wong.

Acupuncture is the practice of placing needles into the body and can be used in the treatment and management of arthritic patients

The more scientific or Western perspective considers the body’s physiologic response to the needles. Needles inserted into specific points increases blood flow to particular areas, bringing with it white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets – all of which aid in healing. Placement of needles can also help to decrease muscle spasms and cause endorphin release.

The traditional Chinese or Eastern Medicine approach focuses more on the body itself, with diseases representing an imbalance in the body. Within the body there are many channels or meridians in which the energy should flow smoothly. When there is an imbalance in this energy such as a disruption or blockage then an imbalance will occur. This imbalance leads to diseases.

Acupuncture should be used as an adjunct to Western Medicine. The Veterinarian may require certain diagnostics be performed, including blood tests, radiographs, ultrasounds or biopsies.

Like any treatment, results may vary. In some cases, the condition improves before plateauing. Sometimes the condition may worsen before getting better, and in other cases the patient requires several treatments before any improvement is seen.

For the month of May, receive 20% off all acupuncture treatments with Dr. Tracy.
