Our Philosophy

Helping your friends enjoy longer healthier lives

The focus of our philosophy is centred around the concept of preventative health. Our aim is to keep your pet in optimal condition to reduce the likelihood of illness. As a direct result, our fees are structured with these principles in mind. Some examples are included and all prices include GST.

Vaccinations

Your pet’s annual vaccination and check-up is an ideal time to assess their overall health and well-being. It gives you an opportunity to voice any concerns you may have about whether your pet is “normal” or not. It also allows us to evaluate every body system thoroughly so that any potential health problems can be addressed early on.

Your annual vaccination and check up includes:

  • A full physical examination
  • Assessment of diet
  • Assessment of worming and flea prevention measures
  • A full written report detailing our recommendations

There is a discount if you bring in more than one pet for vaccination. Please contact us for pricing.

Desexings

Although desexing operations are commonly performed, this surgery still requires the care and attention that all general anaesthetics and surgery demands. As you plan for this important surgery, be assured that our hospital takes this procedure as seriously as you do.

At our hospital, all desexings receive a pre-anaesthetic evaluation, followed by a premedication to reduce stress and anxiety and to minimise the amount of anaesthetic used. All but the briefest procedures are intubated and maintained on isofluorane gas, which is the safest in veterinary practice. Anaesthesia is monitored by both electronic equipment and experienced nursing staff. All animals have their own sterilised surgical instrumentation kit. A pain killer injection and antibiotic injection are administered routinely and is effective for up to 24 hours. We encourage all surgical patients to undergo a preanesthetic blood test, as it is important to ensure that the liver and kidneys are functioning normally to reduce any risks associated with the anaesthetic drugs. It also monitors red blood cell count, white blood cell count, protein and glucose levels.

Heartworm Prevention

Heartworm disease can be a fatal condition. Luckily, it is also a condition that can be easily prevented. The heartworm preventatives that we recommend are safe, easy and effective, and they need to be administered to your dog on a monthly basis, either as a tasty tablet or a spot-on application. Many heartworm preventatives also combine intestinal wormers, flea control or both. For those who find it impossible to remember a monthly tablet, a yearly injection is now available to prevent heartworm.

Intestinal Worms

Intestinal worms can cause diarrhoea, weight-loss and anaemia to your pets. However, what your pet’s intestinal worms can do to you can be much more devastating. Potentially, they can cause blindness, cyst formation in vital organs, and massive growths which act like tumours. Keeping intestinal worms at bay is easy. Your pet should be wormed at least every 3 months, to protect both you and your pet.

Fleas

Fleas are the most common external parasite in dogs and cats. They not only cause skin irritations to you and your pet but they can also transmit harmful diseases. Each female flea can produce up to 50 eggs each day, so once you notice any problems, a flea infestation may have already occurred. Luckily, flea treatment and prevention is easy. Topical preparations, like Frontline Plus and Advocate kill not only the adult fleas, but also the immature stages which develop in your pet’s environment. They should be given monthly, even in the colder months, as most fleas thrive in heated environments.
